Teenage Filmstars are an English, post punk, independent, psychedelic 1980s-90s band, formed in 1979 by Edward Ball, Daniel Treacy and Joseph Foster. The band segued into The Times in 1980, re-appearing on Creation Records in 1992.
TEENAGE FILMSTARS 1979-1980
Having recorded and released the last 'O' Level single "We Love Malcolm" (1978) by himself, Edward Ball dropped the name in favour of the Teenage Filmstars, spring 1979.
Opting to record as a band again, He invited old school friends Daniel Treacy and Joseph Foster to guest on the first single, "(There's a) Cloud Over Liverpool" (1979).
Championed by Radio 1 DJ John Peel (perhaps for the song's sideways nod to Liverpool FC, of whom Peel was a fan), the record received a further lease of life more than a year later when American record shops and college radio stations mistook it for a tribute to the recent death of John Lennon.

Followed by the comparatively weak "The Odd Man Out" (1980), which served only to highlight Ball's musical abilities to mimic contemporary pop music at will (ska / electro pop), the Teenage Filmstars and TV Personalities played their first live shows with Ball playing in both groups.
During this period of exposing newly-written compositions to live audiences (sometimes even making them up on the spot) Treacy and Ball nominated personal figureheads that almost personified their own destinies - Teenage Filmstars "I Helped Patrick McGoohan Escape" (1980) and the TV Personalities "I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives" (1981). . .
As the Teenage Filmstars began recording their debut album in November 1980, Ball once again changed the band's name, this time to The Times. These sessions eventually appeared as "Go! With The Times" (1985).

Had the Teenage Filmstars ended here they would perhaps be recalled for two singles of some interest in the formative UK DIY 7" singles foodchain.
TEENAGE FILMSTARS 1992-1999
So when the Teenage Filmstars reappeared on Creation Records 12 years later during that label's most innovative period, with the album 'Lift Off Mit Der Teenage Filmstars' (otherwise known as 'Star' 1992), they stood at the vanguard of an undeniable revolution in sonic experiment.
Partly bearing witness to My Bloody Valentine's release from the previous year, 'Loveless', the forthcoming progressive 90's psychedelia and Ball's own troubled vision of popular music, it prompted Kevin Shields to remark of Ball in 1995, "A sensitive soul from another planet. A modernist musical alchemist - where other people struggle Ed plays what we're thinking."
Following their debut to its next level, "Rocket Charms" (1993) is a tighter concept, though perhaps suffering from this as a result. The band sound, everything recorded backwards with little regard to recognised stereo placement and instrumentation levels is present and correct, but the danger element quota is lower.
So for the third issue by the new Teenage Filmstars to be considered by some to be the last great record released by Creation is more than a little surprising. On "Ssenkcis Rou Troppus Drocer Ruo Yub" aka "Buy Our Record Support Our Sickness" (1997), the Teenage Filmstars fulfill the ambitious psychedelic album concept, and haul in an avant-garde sixties / seventies progressive rock hybrid that resembles the morphing creatures in Alien movies.

"Welcome to Hell!" o)
Dedicated to Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and My Final Girl.
Taken from Popandscratches blogspot.
Ed Ball is an incredibly hard man to pin down. About as close as one could get would be to say that his ventures have been all encompassing of the Indie genre in the same way that Creation Records symbolized "Indieness" in the early 90's. His output, both solo and with the Television Personalities, the Times, and O-Level provide great tunes for all.
When 'Star' was released in 1992, the Teenage Filmstars caught the attention of not only the indie kids, but also of those who were looking to keep the Orb's trancey electronica alive.Ball personified the output of Creation Records and many would have him to thank for providing inspiration. There is a little something of his style in almost all of his label mates output from the time.
'Lift Off Mit Der Teenage Filmstars' (otherwise known as 'Star') has many similarities with My Bloody Valentine's release from the previous year, 'Loveless'. Intricate loops swirl in and out, and there are swathes of effects-laden guitars. Even the vocals are kept deliberately low in the mix on most of the tracks, reminiscent of Belinda Butcher's breathy voice.
But, this album is far from being a copy of 'Loveless'. True, it has much of My Bloody Valentine's psychedelic style but it also has so much more. The sleevenotes for 'Star' provide no clues as to who provides the female vocals on some of the tracks - It may be Belinda herself.
One might feel that My Bloody Valentine's front man, Kevin Shields, would not appreciate such a closeness to their own masterpiece, yet Shields is far from derogatory, "A sensitive soul from another planet. A modernist musical alchemist - where other people struggle Ed plays what we're thinking." Fond words from one genius to another.
The quote was made for the sleevenotes of the Ed Ball/Teenage Filmstars/the Times/O-Level compilation album, 'Here's to Old England' (Artpop!, 2005).The first track on the album, 'Kiss Me' is anthemic and akin to the Nice's 'America'. It sets the tone for what is to come - progressive 90's psychedelia.'Loving' and 'Inner Space' could quite easily be mistaken for My Bloody Valentine tracks, yet there is a certain edge, a traditional pop song element, that sets them apart - an added dimension which makes them more accessible.
'Vibrations' is the simplest of songs. A sample looped over and over draws you in and holds you tight within the first few bars. It refuses to let you go for a whole six minutes. It is both incessant and beautiful in its hallucinogenic grip.
There are few artists that would be bold enough to mix samples from 'Bladerunner' with Steeleye Span's 'Gaudete'.One might think that this would be just too far out there, but Ball can do no wrong and is truly inspirational. The words, "Time to die" creep in like paranoia on a bad trip, but the music offsets this unease and all is well in the world.
The final track of the error-free ten, 'Moon', picks up the beat once more is the symphonic encore that the album deserves. Heavy drums battle it out with feedback guitars and distorted synths, It builds to a crescendo with a furious drum roll, then fades leaving you wondering where you have been and what you have been doing. It leaves you wondering how and why this album slipped through the net.
'Star' is a tremendously busy album. It is, however, far from being chaotic or unlistenable. It flows elegantly from start to finish and over the 54 minutes there is not one point at which Ed Ball's talents can be doubted.

1988's Beat Torture was standard late-'80s U.K. guitar jangle à la Creation's house band, Biff Bang Pow!, half of which serves as Ball's backing band, but 1989's ecstatically titled E For Edward dips tentatively into the acid house boom spreading over the country that summer. (Ball recorded three acid house EPs under the name the Love Corporation in the early '90s.)
Three more Times albums followed, Et Dieu Crea la Femme (1990), Pure (1991), and Alternative Commercial Crossover (1993) before Ball discarded that band name for good.
Rather than start a proper solo career right away, however, Ball simply picked up one of his old pseudonyms. Although Foster and Treacy aren't involved, Ball released two solo albums under the name the Teenage Filmstars.
1993's Rocket Charms is not too different from late-period Times albums, but 1995's Buy Our Record, Support Our Sickness is something of a conceptual masterpiece: with the exception of the drums, every instrument and vocal is recorded backwards, resulting in a surprisingly listenable piece of experimental psych-pop.

"A Hit-And-Run Desire - A Study In Physical Tragicomedy" o)
Dedicated to Mick Travis, Anna Karina and my If . . .Girl.
After the decline of the shoegazing trend that Creation records was the center of, the label fell upon somewhat hard times -- Buy Our Record Support Our Sickness, released in 1997, could be seen as one of the last great records to come from the label. As for the Teenage Filmstars, a shoegazing reference could be made, but it would be pretty far off -- for this ambitious psychedelic concept album, the group looked to predecessors like Can's Tago Mago, then created an album on which every element (with the exception of drums) is recorded backwards (hence the reversal of the title). The result is far more appealing than one might expect: rather than winding up with an interesting but not-so-listenable conceptual piece, the group manages to create tracks that actually tend to rock, recalling the best and most avant-garde forces in sixties and seventies experimental and progressive rock -- even more amazing, very clear organizations and melodies come through the reversed attack of each guitar and vocal line. Add this to the obvious fun that could be had by reversing portions of the album and listening to them as they were recorded, and the result is a pretty fascinating and appealing release. ~ Nitsuh Abebe, All Music Guide
