The same reasoning behind "don't let your friends/the world influence what happens to your eternal life" could easily be applied to any other religion, cult, superstition, or mental illness. Marshall Applewhite and Jim Jones instilled the same paranoid isolationist mentality into their flocks, since it was the only way to maintain followers in such ridiculous beliefs. Any idea with any merit should openly seek challenge and debate to prove that it can stand up to scrutiny. Cults, on the other hand, will tell you to ignore dissenting opinions.

When someone says, "don't let your friends/the world influence what happens to your eternal life," they are basically saying:

"Don't let anyone's arguments, logic, evidence, or reasoning influence your decisions. Don't pay attention to reality, because it's evil. Stick with the Christianity that has been programmed into you and never consider that you're wrong. Assume that anything contrary to Christian teachings or scripture is either an illusion or a trick of the Devil. The only way to remain a Christian is to ignore everything your brain or senses tell you. Be irrational."
