A "problem" creates a market for a solution, and businesses spring up to "solve" it. But the only markets that businesses ever give up willingly are markets that they can't find a way to revitalize. And there's no kind of moral prohibition or ideological commitment that can reverse that dynamic across an entire economic sector.

I'm not saying they want to be rich or powerful. I"m saying that any organization or business that depends for its funding on outrage over some problem is tacitly an ally of that problem. In theory that shouldn't matter because the world will never be perfect, and if you solve a problem you can always move on to solving a new one. But in practice that rarely if ever happens. Problem solving becomes problem management. Look around at any "pressing issue" and tell me I'm wrong.
