ROOSEVELT MATTHEWS -YOU GOT ME DIGGIN' YOU (KING)
Roosevelt "Mac" Matthews adds his baritone vocals throughout both sides of 1968 King Record release 45-6173 either the funky version of Bell/Butler's “Tighten Up” (singing "Tighten Up Tighter") or the slow soulful midpaced "You Got Me Diggin’ You". The featured filp side is penned by Matthews who is still missing the woman who walked out on him. Both backings are supplied by Billy Ball and The Upsetters. Although Ball’s group were based in Indianapolis all their discs were apparently cut in Nashville. King Records was unique among the independent labels because the entire production process was done in-house: recording, mastering, printing, pressing and shipping. This gave them complete control, and a record could be recorded one day and shipped to radio stations the next day in quantities as small as 50. For that reason, King records that did not sell well are now rare. Possibly why original blue issues of Roosevelt Matthews remain hard-to-find. Matthews along with Aubrey Wallace turn out to be the soul duo of Chuck & Mac who recorded on Ruby and Twinight Records. "Powerful Love" 1970 is featured twice in 2012 Sci-Fi Time Travel Film "Looper". Kent Records also released a UK 7 inch single of "You Got Me Diggin' You" on their Gusto "A Kent Pick" label series (slightly shorter version) 2009 on the flip of Cody Black's "I'm Slowly Moulding". The abbreviated track is also featured on two Kent CD releases. King Northern Soul Vol 1 Various Artists Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures Vol 4 Various Artists
