Aram Khachaturian Piano Concerto in D flat major (composed in 1936) played by Dame Moura Lympany and the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Anatole Fistoulari This often overlooked and undervalued work is, frankly, one of my favorite piano concertos. I admire it, among many other criteria, for its harmonic and textural exoticism, for its strikingly original melodic writing and for the precision and deliberateness of its aesthetic, with its seamless molding of the rhytms and melodies of Armenian folk music into an ambitious symphonic-concertante form. Why is this work not more often played and heard? Why was George W. Bush a two-term president? The world is never short of injustices and regrets, and one can only either mourn, protest or make the best of it. I choose all three, AND SO CAN YOU! The piano concerto was actually written with Moura Lympany in mind as the soloist of the premiere. With due consideration of the bad recording quality, this is nevertheless a remarkable performance. Could someone upload a William Kapell recording? No doubt, it also deserves to be heard ...
