Video Volunteers is creating a social media network of community producers from slums and villages.
Channel 19, is an 'online channel' featuring the work of 65 'Community Video Producers' in India. It's an initiative of a Social Media Network developed by Drishti, Video Volunteers and twelve Indian NGOs, to empower poor communities in India with a voice.
Channel 19 features the work of 12 'Community Video Units' (CVU) in India. Each CVU has a handful of Producers who produce 30-minute 'Video News Magazines" on a regular basis and screen them on widescreen projectors to thousands of people a month in the slums and villages. The Producers aim is to get their communities talking about the critical issues that the mainstream media ignores—like health, education and employment. This is media that is truly of, for and by communities, and everything you see on the online channel is shot, edited and scripted by sixty Community Video Producers.
