	Stop Bloody Whaling - Part 1 The Cree Indians had a saying in the 19th century: "Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realize that we cannot eat money" Many whale species were driven to the edge of extinction by whalers so intent on making money that they didn't stop to think about the consequences for future generations. Some have passed a point of no return, their numbers too few to be genetically viable. (1 week ago)

As a matter of fact, WDCS had a key role to play behind the scenes in the rejection of Greenland's flawed subsistence-cum-commercial whaling proposal. WDCS' scientists and legal experts were on hand throughout the meeting to advise government representatives on conservation issues, and the tactics of the pro-whaling lobby. (2 weeks ago)
	Fin whales are still listed as Endangered by the IUCN, and the figures for Minke whales are disputed - nobody really knows how many there are because an in-depth study has yet to be done. Also, the simplistic argument of comparing figures ignores the fact that the these may be composed of socially and genetically distinct individual populations. What we DO know is that whale populations, as a whole, are dramatically lower that pre-industrialized hunting -in some cases by as much as 98%. (2 weeks ago)
	...50 lives of an endangered species. Cows are not endangered. Also, this argument ignores the welfare issue - whaling is an intolerably cruel practice which causes immense and prolonged suffering to animals that would never be accepted in a commercial abattoir. (2 weeks ago)
