What caused the meltdown was de-regulation of rules, such as reserve requirements, transparency, reporting, sound banking practices, offshoring, banks lying to each other, everyone agreeing to believe each others' lies. Hedge funds, banks, and insurance companies creating Credit Default Swaps out of crappy mortgages.
Liars' loans --- not by home buyers and homeowners --- by Wall Street

(Normal reserve requirements are 1-10. These institutions began operating on reserves of around 1-70. Maybe even worse if you consider that their collateral was only worth ???who the f### knows???.)
