i've been learning violin and here's my opinion: it is much harder to become an expert violinist because the virtuoso tradition has been around for a lot longer on violin than on cello. the repertoire is much more difficult. however, cellists have to shift a lot more. we can't play scales in one position without using open strings. so that makes things a lot more difficult from a technical and musical perspective.
