MEPs BACK CONTESTED TELECOMS PLAN

European politicians have voted in favour of amendments to telecoms law which campaigners say could be used to curb privacy online and file-sharing.

Digital rights groups in Europe have formed a loose coalition to highlight their opposition to the amendments.

But MEPs have denied that the amendments are aimed at throwing file-sharers off the net.
But campaigners say one of the amendments - which could allow governments to decide which software can be used on the web - makes it easier to enforce the controversial "three strikes" law which the music industry is keen to use in order to clamp down on file-sharers.
It would see users receive two warnings if they download copyright material without permission, followed by a complete web ban.

Tentative steps towards such a policy are already underway in the UK with the BPI (formerly the British Phonographic Industry) policing file-sharing sites and informing ISPs of people downloading material illegally.
The Foundation for a Free Internet Infrastructure (FFII) warned that they could create a "Soviet internet" on which only software and services approved by governments would be allowed to run.

"Tomorrow popular software applications like Skype or even Firefox might be declared illegal in Europe if they are not certified by an administrative authority," said a FFII spokesman in a statement.

But Mr Harbour claimed the legislation has entirely more innocent intentions. full article

	policestate uk sorry if i was abit harsh m8,i will try and find the advert for you i know it is ridiculous but that is what they are saying,if you have two phones or a lock up etc you COULD be a terrorist,they want to know and get us spying on each other to maintain a policestate type control over us and get us not to trust each other,i can remember when they said if you had two phones you must be a drug dealer,i too have more than one phone,councils now can bug your phones and email in the uk and are doing. Evidently, having a beer and talking to other ancient 40 year olds gets the young robo cops a little excited. Dude actually put his hand on his baton and postured up while talking to us. Whew. Glad we could talk him down a bit. Ü missing you too!

I recently got a job which partly involved watching over raw footage of films and TV shows for technical errors before they are reproduced to the public or for company guest screenings... and today i had to look over this highly propaganda-rised programme called ACPO-APR news (made by ITN) about how great and high tech the police are and listening to one of the officer's interviewed he tried to suggest that security and control is more important than liberty.. I felt like turning it off but i would have got fired!!
