Japanese song 日本の歌 (for Seiji Kojima) composed and performed by David W Solomons Score available from http://dwsolo.load.cd/sheetmusic/sm-6... mp3 available from itunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/japa... This "song" for classical guitar is based on an original melody using a minor pentatonic scale, in quasi-Japanese style, with many effective classical guitar techniques and variations. I wrote this "song" for a friend at Oxford University by the name of Seiji Kojima, back in 1975. The notes of the melody reflect the sound of his name. I have since discovered that he is now the Japanese ambassador to Pakistan - how things move on! #YouTubeHighFive #youtubehighfive
Quartets, quintets and other combinations for violins, violas and cellos, composed by David W Solomons
Score http://dwsolo.load.cd/sheetmusic/sm-85047_string_quartet_no_1.html This string quartet in Octatonic Mode* by David W Solomons has been performed several times The quartet is illustrated here by photos and footage of works by local chainsaw artist Tim Burgess. His carvings, created from trees that have died naturally, are appearing in many parks and gardens throughout Cheshire. His site is: http://thetimburgess.typepad.com Although the movements didn't have titles initially I have now given the videos titles, as suggested by the blend of music and images: 1 Tower [in Worthington park Sale] 2 Wizards [in various parts of Cheshire] 3 Bones and Birds [mainly birds of prey] 4 On the tree top [based on nursery rhymes and childhood memories and finally returning to the Tower theme of the 1st movement] (*Technical note for musicians: The Octatonic mode is the "mode of limited transposition", using the version 2121212 in this case. In the third movement, the viola is in Dorian, while the rest of the instruments stay in Octatonic, a polymodal form that works surprizingly well.)
